First published in 1996, the New Living Translation (NLT) was developed by a team of 90 biblical scholars with the aim of creating a translation that is highly readable and accessible to modern readers. The translation originated as an effort to update The Living Bible, a popular paraphrase from the 1970s, into a fully scholarly and accurate version.
The NLT translators worked with the original Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek texts, employing a combination of formal equivalence (word-for-word) and dynamic equivalence (thought-for-thought) translation methods. They aimed to convey the meaning and style of the original texts in modern language, using a more dynamic approach when literal translation would be difficult to understand or potentially misleading.
