First published in 2017, the Christian Standard Bible (CSB) is a revision and replacement of the Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB), which was originally released in 2004. The CSB was developed by a diverse team of 100 scholars from 17 denominations, under the guidance of Lifeway Christian Resources and Holman Bible Publishers. This new translation aimed to address some of the idiosyncrasies of the HCSB while maintaining its commitment to accuracy and readability.
The CSB translators employed a translation philosophy called “optimal equivalence” to balance linguistic precision to the original languages with readability in contemporary English. The CSB aims to be highly literal to the original languages in places where a word-for-word rendering is understandable, while using more dynamic translation when necessary to convey the original meaning clearly. This balanced approach makes the CSB suitable for both serious study and everyday reading, appealing to pastors, scholars, and laypeople alike. Since its release, the CSB has gained popularity for its accuracy, clarity, and readability, making it an effective tool for personal study, preaching, and evangelism.
