Originally published in 1978, the New International Version (NIV) was developed by a global team of over 100 scholars from various denominations. The project began in the 1960s with the goal of producing a Bible translation that balanced accuracy with readability, bringing scripture into contemporary language for modern readers.
The translation process began in 1967 under the New York Bible Society (now Biblica), involving a core group of 15 scholars and over 100 contributors who worked with original Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek texts. The New Testament was released in 1973, followed by the complete NIV Bible in 1978, with subsequent revisions in 1984 and 2011. The NIV has become one of the best-selling translations, with over 450 million copies distributed as of 2013. Its success is attributed to its balance of accuracy and readability, making it accessible to a broad audience while maintaining fidelity to the original texts. The Committee on Bible Translation continues to refine the NIV to ensure its relevance and clarity for modern readers.
